Heavyweight for the chemical industry

A cooling drum has been fabricated and installed for the fertilizer production of an international chemical group.

The 60-ton drum with a diameter of 3.7 meters and a length 14 meters was produced by Kremsmueller’s Apparate- und Behälterbau business unit. The drum had to meet especially high quality specifications and close fabrication tolerances. Extremely heat-resistant materials – 13 CrMo 4 5 for the outer shell and 1.4841 for the internal fittings – were used.

The challenge here was the separate fabrication procedure: The canted interior structure had to be fitted exactly into the welded outer structure. A precise study of material behavior is a must for constructing equipment of this type.

Work on dismantling the old equipment was begun at the same time fabrication was proceeding in the workshop. Upon delivery, the drum was transported to the plant on tracks using a 500-ton crane and subsequently installed. Twenty tons of blade sheet, a 16-ton drive train with gear rim, as well as the gearing and motor were installed in and around the new cooling drum in the plant.
